Women's volleyball splits with competition at Viterbo

After losing their first match in the Viterbo Holiday Inn Preseason Tournament on Aug. 22, the Trinity women's volleyball team knew they needed to change the narrative during their second day of competition.

During the first match against Mayville State, the Trolls did just that. The first set was close to start, but Trinity pulled away at the end, securing the set 25-20.

The second set started the same, with the two teams going neck and neck throughout the match. But it wasn't long before the Trolls pulled ahead, winning that match 25-17.

Once the third set started, the team did not let up. Trinity took control of the match early and did not let up, winning the third and final set 25-12.

Three hitters had double-digit numbers during that match, including Sarah Kiwan with 14, Anna Maatman with 11, and Mady Zula with 10. Controlling the offense was Dani Van Laten, who had a double-double in the match, finishing with 41 assists and 16 digs. The only person to have more digs than Van Laten was Brianna Figueroa, who had 19.

From there, the Trolls had some time off before stepping back on the court to face Saint Francis (Ind.). The two teams kept it close during all three sets, but at the end, it was the Cougars who got the sweep, beating the Trolls 25-23, 25-23 and 25-22.

During this set, Figueroa put in a lot of work on defense, finishing the match with 21 digs. Kiwan and Maatman were the only two finishing with double-digit kills, both securing 10. In the front row, Britta Heggeland contributed to the defensive effort, finishing with four blocks while also getting six kills.

The Trolls will be back in action on Aug. 30 and 31 for the Saint Xavier/Trinity Crossover, which will be held in the DeVos Gymnasium.
