Trinity Takes One at Saint Xavier

In the final week of regular season play the Trolls faced Saint Xavier University (Chicago, Illinois) in a conference double-header. Trinity started off with an 11-4 loss in the first game, but came back with a victory in the second game. In the win they came from behind to post a 7-5 final. The team is now 21-25 for the season and 9-15 in the CCAC.

Each team scored in the 2nd inning of the first game to start things off. The Trolls connected on three hits in the 3rd inning to score two runs to take the lead. However Saint Xavier doubled that run production in the bottom half to make it a 5-3 game.

Trinity edged closer with a run in the 4th inning, but the Cougars got that one back in the 5th inning to maintain the two run gap. A couple of fielding errors to start the sixth inning allowed Saint Xavier to get runners on base. The Cougars went on to score five runs in the inning to take control of the game. Trinity had runners on first and third in the 7th, but did not bring them home.

Each team had 10 hits for the game. Tyler Sroczynski, Stefano Belmonte, and Kyle VanKalker each had two. Clay DeHaan pitched for five innings and took the loss.

The Trolls trailed 1-0 after three innings in the second game, but took the lead in the 4th inning on back-to-back homers by Chris Riemersma and VanKalker to score three runs. The Cougars gained one in the 5th and two in the 6th to go ahead at 4-3.

The scoring went back in favor of the Trolls in the 7th inning as they added four runs. Belmonte’s double accounted for one of those runs and a single by VanKalker was another RBI. The Cougars scored in the bottom half to make it 7-5. The Trolls did not get another run, but they also held the Cougars in the final two innings to take the win.

For the game Trinity had nine hits as did Saint Xavier.  Belmonte recorded three hits while Sroczynski, Riemersma, and VanKalker each had two. Tyler Fortier came in the game as relief for the win and Tyler LaFlamme pitched the final three innings for the save.

The Trolls have their final home contest on April 28 at 3:30 pm against Olivet Nazarene University.
