Trolls Take Down Phoenix

The Trolls started play in the Trinity/Saint Xavier Crossover with a home match against Cumberland University (Lebanon, Tennessee). Trinity started with a 25-18 victory in the first set. They had to battle their way to a 25-23 victory in the third set. With the 2-0 advantage the controlled the third set and ended with a 25-16 win.  With the victory the team moves to 11-9 overall.

The early part of the first set was close until a four point run by the Trolls created a 13-9 lead. Throughout the rest of the set Trinity continued to hold a few point advantage. They went ahead by as a many as six points at 22-16 and increased their lead to a seven point gap at 24-17 on a kill by Danny Lawrence. The teams traded service errors for the final two points of the set.

The score of the second set remained tight, but midway through play Cumberland had a 15-10 lead. Trinity trailed until a four point run with Ben Tocila at the service line gave the Trolls a 17-16 lead. Trinity stayed on top of the scoreboard and held off the Phoenix. With a tied scored at 23-23 the Trolls registered kills by Dan Ryan and Jonathan Poortinga to finish the set.

Trinity took an early lead in the third set and continued to pull away. With only a two point edge at 10-8, they outscored Cumberland 8-to-3 to open up an 18-11 lead. The Trolls did not let the Phoenix gain any ground as they finished with the nine-point win.

For the match the Trolls had 40 kills with a .281 attacking percentage and Cumberland had 24 kills with a .050 percentage. Trinity ended with 30 digs and five blocks. Eddie Binion led the team with nine kills, Poortinga had eight, and Ben Tocila and Jake Ostema each had seven.  Ostema led the team with four blocks. Adam Becker ended the match with 11 digs and Lawrence had 32 assists.

Trinity continues action in the Crossover on Saturday, March 23, with a 10 am match with Mount Mercy University.
