Trolls Drop Match to Wolves

Starting their second round of conference play, the Trolls battled in a match at Cardinal Stritch University (Milwaukee, Wisconsin). Trinity, who defeated the Wolves in the first round of the CCAC schedule, could not repeat that result as they lost in five sets. The first two sets were lopsided scores with Trinity taking the first one at 25-12 and losing the second at 25-15. Trinity took the advantage with a 25-20 win in set three, but fell 25-17 in the fourth set. The final set was tight before the Trolls lost 15-12. The team is now 8-6 overall and 4-3 in the CCAC.

Trinity took over in the first set and gained points by the handful with a number of scoring runs. The team took an 18-9 lead and finished out at 25-12. The second set went in the opposite direction as the Wolves took the lead and pulled away from the Trolls for the 25-15 final.

The match got tighter in the next two sets with closer scores. Trinity held the slight lead throughout the third set until they built a cushion with a 20-14 lead. The Wolves pulled to within three at 20-23, before Trinity finished on out a service error by Cardinal Stritch and a service ace by Ben Tocila.

Cardinal Stritch took the early lead in the fourth set and the Trolls had to play from behind. Trinity fell behind by eight points at 20-12 and only closed the gap to six points before the final 25-17 loss.

In the deciding set the point spread was never more than three points. Cardinal Stritch was the first team to eight points with an 8-6 lead, but Trinity quickly made up those two points to tie the score. The teams were again deadlocked at 10-10 until the Trolls dropped two points on attacking errors. After exchanging points the largest gap in the match came when the Wolves took a 14-11 lead. After holding the Wolves for one point, the Trolls lost the final point and the match.

For the match the Trolls had 43 kills with a .179 attacking percentage. Cardinal Stritch had 58 kills with a .236 attacking percentage.  The Trolls ended with 34 digs and nine blocks and the Wolves had 36 digs and 11.5 blocks.  Djordje Novakovic led the team with 13 kills and Ben Tocila had 10 kills. Jake Ostema had six blocks and Novakovic has 14 digs.

The Trolls play next at home in a non-conference match against Concordia University at 11 am.
