Trolls Take V-Hawks in Three Sets

The Trolls made a long road trip to La Crosse, Wisconsin, to play in a conference match at Viterbo University.  Trinity defeated the V-Hawks in three sets to stay in a tie at the top of the conference standings. The team battled through the first set to take a 25-22 win. They cruised to a 25-12 win in the second set and then held the lead in the third set to finish out the match with a 25-22 win. Trinity is 8-4 overall and 4-1 in the CCAC.

The first set was very tight and tied multiple times before the Trolls went on a four point run to take a 19-15 lead. Through the remainder of the set Trinity continued to keep the top spot and hold off the
V-Hawks. At set point the Trolls finished for the win on a kill by Jonathan Poortinga.

The Trolls firmly took control of the second set and pulled away from Viterbo. As the set progressed the scoring difference continued to increase. Trinity went ahead by double digits at 18-8 and late in the set they had a 23-12 lead. The final two points came on two ace serves by Adam Becker.

Trinity took the early lead in the third set at 10-5. Through the remainder of the set the Troll maintained the edge by a few points. The Trolls reached set point at 24-20 on a kill by Jake Ostema. The V-Hawks rallied to hold Trinity off as they scored the next two points. However they could not keep the set alive as the Trolls scored the final point on an error by Viterbo.

Trinity ended the match with 34 kills behind a .316 attacking percentage. Viterbo had 28 kills with a .125 attacking percentage. Trinity was led by Poortinga with 11 kills and a .769 attacking percentage. Ostema had eight kills while Dan Ryan and Djordje Novakovic each added seven kills. Mike Quiroz had 20 assists and Danny Lawrence had 11. Micah Vanderbilt ended with 13 digs.

The Trolls will play again on September 21 in a conference match at St. Ambrose University at 7 pm.
