Trolls Down Eagles

The Trolls jump to 2-0 in the conference with a four set victory over Robert Morris University (Chicago, Illinois). The first set alone lasted 40 minutes and went well beyond the normal 25 point win mark. When it was done the Trolls ended with a 37-35 loss. The team came right back and took the next three sets at 25-21, 25-19, and 25-19. The victory is the first time Trinity’s men’s volleyball program has defeated Robert Morris. Previously the Trolls had a 0-6 record against this opponent. The team is 5-2 for the season.

In the first set there were a total of 72 combined points and the teams reached set point 12 times. Throughout the entire set the largest lead was three points and that came once when Robert Morris went ahead at 21-18.

The Eagles were the first team to reach set point at 24-23, but the teams battled back and forth from there. Each team gained the set point advantage, but the score was tied at each point from 24-24 to 35-35. In that stretch 13 of the points were scored on kills. Robert Morris registered a kill to gain the edge at 36-35 and then won the set on an attacking error by the Trolls.

The second set was tight, but midway through the set the Trolls gained a slight advantage at 14-12. Robert Morris tied the score twice after that, but Trinity pushed ahead for a 21-18 lead. The Trolls gained a four point lead at 24-20 and, after giving up one point, they won the set on a service error by the Eagles.

The Trolls took the early lead in the third set and were ahead at 8-3. Robert Morris closed the gap at 13-11, but Trinity answered with a four point run to post a 17-11 lead. The Trolls continued to hold off the Eagles for the six-point win at 25-19.

Similar to the third set, the Trolls took the lead early in the fourth set. Throughout the set they maintained the top spot by a handful of points. The Trolls reached set point at 24-18 and the teams traded service errors for the final two points of the match.

For the match Trinity had 51 kills with a .242 attacking percentage and Robert Morris had 51 kills with a .149 attacking percentage. The Trolls recorded six blocks and the Eagles had five.  Djordje Novakovic had 14 kills, Ben Tocila had 12, and Jake Ostema had 10. Danny Lawrence ended the match with 47 assists, eight digs, and three blocks. Novakovic led the dig category with 14 while Adam Becker and Tocila each had 11.

The Trolls will play again on February 7 at Goshen College at 7 pm ET in a non-conference match.
