Trolls Finish in Fourth Place

In the second day of action of the NCCAA Men’s Volleyball Invitational the Trolls took their first losses of the season. To finish their pool play the #3 Trolls faced #2 Campbellsville University (KY) in the morning match. Trinity fell to the Tigers in three sets at 25-20, 26-24, and 25-17.  With a 2-1 pool record the team moved to the third place match in which they lost to #4 Greenville University (IL) in three sets at 25-22, 25-19, 26-24. Overall the Trolls are 4-2 for the season.

In the match with Campbellsville the Trolls fell behind early in the first set and trailed at 15-9. They fought their way back and pulled to within two points at 15-13. Trinity could not completely erase the deficit and ended with the five point loss.

Trinity started in an 8-0 deficit in the second set, but rallied back to take over the lead at 15-14. For the rest of the set the teams were never separated by more than three points. The teams were tied at 23-23 and after an attacking error and a kill by Ben Tocila they were tied again at 24-24. Campbellsville scored on kill to take the advantage and finished the set on an ace serve.

In the third set the Trolls fell behind at 18-10 and this time were not able to make up the deficit. They narrowed the gap to five points, but in the end lost by eight points.

For the match Trinity had 34 kills with a .299 attacking percentage and Campbellsville had 39 kills and .304 attacking percentage. Djordje Novakovic led the team with 11 kills. Jonathan Poortinga had three blocks and Danny Lawrence ended with three blocks, nine digs, and 28 assists.

With a 2-1 pool record the Trolls moved to the third place match to face Greenville who ended with a 2-1 record in their pool. On a four point run by Greenville, Trinity fell behind at 10-5 in the first set. They never erased the deficit and ended in the 25-22 loss.

In the second set the Trolls could not string points together while Greenville scored in small runs. Trinity fell behind by as many as nine points before closing the gap to six, 25-19, at the set’s end.

The Trolls were not ready to let the match go and battled through the third set. The teams were only separated by a couple of points. Greenville gained the set point at 24-22, but with kills by Novakovic and Jake Ostema the team tied the set at 24-24. Unfortunately Greenville answered with two kills to hand the Trolls the loss.  

Trinity had 30 kills with a .159 attacking percentage and Greenville had 37 kills with a .266 attacking percentage. The Trolls were led by Novakovic and Eddie Binion with seven kills each. Danny Lawrence had six blocks and 26 assists.

Djordje Novakovic was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Trinity plays next on January 29 at St. Ambrose University at 7 pm.
