Trolls Post Win in Opener

The 2019 season opened with a victory for the Trolls in a non-conference match against Goshen College (Goshen, Indiana).  Two of the sets were decisive victories for each of the teams, while the other two sets were decided by two points. The Trolls gained the edge in those two close sets to take the 3-1 victory. The set scores were 25-23, 16-25, 25-23, and 25-15.

In the opening set the Trolls trailed in the early part of play and were down by six points at 12-6. They inched their way back and on a kill by freshman Jake Ostema they tied the score at 16-16. The teams were tied four more times including a final deadlock at 23-23. Two attacking errors by the Maple Leafs gave the Trolls the final two points for the win.

Trinity fell behind again in the second set and this time did not fight their way back to the lead. They were only down by two at 12-10, but gave up the next four points to increase the gap to six. In the end the Trolls took a nine point loss at 25-16.

The third set was close the entire set with no more than three points separating the Trolls at any one time. On a kill by Dan Ryan, Trinity tied the set at 20-20 and then went ahead on two errors by Goshen. The Trolls maintained their slight edge and finished the set at 25-23 on a kill by Ben Tocila.

A three point run midway through the final set created a 12-6 lead for the Trolls. From there they continued to hold the advantage and keep Goshen from gaining ground. Late in the game Trinity strung together three more points to take a 23-14 lead.  After giving up one point, the team gained the victory on a kill by Djordje Novakovic and an ace by Ryan.

The Trolls ended the match with 47 kills on a .224 attacking percentage. Goshen had 40 kills with a .150 attacking percentage. Ryan had 14 kills and Novakovic had 11.  Danny Lawrence handed out 40 assists. Also at the net Jonathan Poortinga ended with five blocks and Ryan had three. Helping out the defense was freshman Adam Becker with 13 digs.
