Trolls Fall to Cougars

The Trolls were in a must-win situation as they played in their final regular season match at Saint Xavier University (Chicago, Illinois).  Needing a win to keep their opportunity to advance to the conference tournament alive, the Trolls battled through five sets with the Cougars. The team lost the first two sets at 25-20 and 25-16, but came back with 25-19 and 26-24 wins in the next two sets. With a 15-11 loss in the fifth set, the Trolls suffered the loss and remain in in in fifth in the standings. The Trolls finishes their season with a 10-16 overall and 4-8 conference record.

The first set was a good indicator of the entire match as they teams battled within a couple of points of each other. After a 16-16 tie, Saint Xavier took a slight lead and the Trolls could not close the gap. The Cougars went up 22-18 and took the 25-20 win.

The Trolls fell behind early in the second set and trailed at 12-4. The sizable difference remained through the set as the Trolls lost by nine points.

Trinity was not ready to let the match go and they fought back in the third set. They took an early 7-3 lead, only to have Saint Xavier tie the set at 7-7. The Trolls regained their top spot and were up 14-10. Trinity did not give up the lead after that and took the set at 25-19.

The fourth set was close throughout, but Saint Xavier on top for a large portion of the set. On a three point run Saint Xavier took a 17-13 lead. The Trolls come back and tied the score at 21-21, then took the lead at 23-21. Trinity gained set point at 24-22 on a service error by Saint Xavier, but could not put the set away as the Cougars gained the next two points. A kill by Eddie Binion created set point again and the team got the win at 26-24 on a kill by Ben Tocila.

The momentum from the fourth set did not carry over into the fifth set as the Trolls fell behind at 10-4. Trinity tried to make up ground, but the closest they got was three points at 14-11 before the Cougars took the win.

For the match the Trolls had 60 kills with a .270 attacking percentage and Saint Xavier had 59 kills with a .247 attack percentage. The Trolls recorded nine blocks and Saint Xavier had five. Eddie Binion led the team with 20 kills while Tocila had 13 and Jonathan Poortinga had 11. Poortinga also had seven blocks while Danny Lawrence had six to go with 15 assists. Mike Quiroz ended the game with 37 assists. The dig category was led by Mike Karl with 13 while Tocila had 11.
