Trolls Lose to Quincy

In a non-conference match the Trolls hosted Quincy University (Quincy, Illinois), a NCAA Division II team. Trinity battled with the Hawks through the first two sets with each team claiming one win. Quincy took the first one at 25-21 and Trinity pulled out a 28-26 win in set two. The Trolls faltered in the next two sets and lost at 25-16 and 25-13. The team is now 9-14 for the season.

In the opening set the teams were tied at 10-10 until the Trolls took a slight advantage which they held until Quincy went ahead 16-15. Later tied at 18-18, Quincy went a five point run to pull ahead 23-18. The Trolls did not recover and took the 25-21 loss.

The Trolls trailed the majority of the second set and were down by four at 21-17. Still trailing 23-20, Trinity scored the next three points to tie the set.  Quincy reached set point first at 24-23, but the Trolls capitalized on two errors to get a 25-24 lead. After the teams traded points the Trolls were again at set point at 26-25. Quincy held Trinity to make it 26-26 before the Trolls got the win on a kill by Jonathan Poortinga followed by a block by Poortinga and Danny Lawrence.

Quincy took the early lead in the third and continued to hold it for the rest of the set.  While the Trolls picked up points one at time the Hawks added points in groups to increase their lead to 25-16 by the end of the set.

Trinity struggled to gain any momentum in the fourth set and fell behind at 12-3. Down 19-9, Trinity gave up the next three points for a 22-9 score. In the end the Trolls lost by 12 points.

The Trolls had a total of 38 kills with a .167 attacking percentage. Quincy had 58 kills with a .351 attacking percentage. Eddie Binion led the team with 13 kills behind a .393 attacking percentage and Ben Tocila had 10 kills. Danny Lawrence ended the game with five blocks and 19 assists. Poortinga also had five blocks and Zach Fitch had four. Mike Karl ended with nine digs.

The Trolls play next on March 20 in a conference game at Judson University at 7 pm.
