Trinity Battles to Five Sets With Fighting Bees

The Trolls pushed No. 4 St. Ambrose University (Davenport, Iowa) to five sets in a conference match. Trinity lost the first set at 25-16, but gained the advantage in the match with 27-25 and 25-18 wins in the next two set.  They could not finish the match as the lost 25-17 in the fourth and took the defeat with a 15-9 loss in set five. The team is 8-11 overall and 2-6 in the CCAC.

In the first set the score was tied at 5-5, but St. Ambrose rallied off the next four points to take a 9-5 lead. They Fighting Bees did not give up the lead for the rest of the set and continued to pull ahead for the nine point win.

Trinity trailed by a few points through a large majority of the second set and was down by four at 18-14. The Trolls gained the next four points to tie the set at 18-18 and had it tied at every point following until the end of the set. St. Ambrose reached set point first at 24-23, but a kill by Eddie Binion kept the set alive. The Fighting Bees went back on top only to have Binion answer again for the 25-25 score.  The Trolls gained the advantage on an error by St. Ambrose and then they finished the set on a block by Binion and Zach Fitch.

Riding the momentum of the previous set the Trolls jumped to a 10-4 lead in the third set.  They continued to stay on top and keep a sizable lead for the 25-18 win.

The match became even again when St. Ambrose took the fourth set. The Fighting Bees started with a 6-0 run. Trinity closed the gap, but trailed the entire set. Late in the set St. Ambrose added points in pairs while the Trolls only gained points one at a time as they slipped further behind.

The Trolls trailed 5-4 in the fifth set, but St. Ambrose rallied off the next seven points to take a 12-4 lead.
 Trailing at 14-6, Trinity put up a good fight to keep the match alive with the next three points to close to 14-9 before St. Ambrose scored to end the match.   

The Trolls ended the match with 42 kills and a .219 attacking percentage. St. Ambrose had 67 kills with a .364 percentage. Trinity had five blocks while St. Ambrose scored on 10 blocks and seven aces.  The Trolls were led by Binion with 18 kills and two blocks. Ben Tocila had 10 kills and two blocks. Mike Quiroz handed out 35 assists and Mike Karl had 11 digs.

The team plays next at Campbellsville University on March 8.
