Trolls Sweep Dordt

In their third home match of the week the Trolls hosted Dordt College (Sioux Center, Iowa) in a non-conference match-up. Trinity needed only three sets to defeat the Defenders. The Trolls controlled the first set with a 25-14 win. The second set was more of a battle, but Trinity came out on top with a25-22 win. The team took over late in the third set to sweep Dordt with a 25-18 win. Trinity is 8-10 for the season.

The Trolls took advantage of a number of attacking errors by the Defenders to jump to a 9-1 start. From there the set belonged to the Trolls as they continued to surge ahead and post a 20-7 lead.  Trinity was two points away from the victory at 23-10 before Dordt rallied off three points and again held the Trolls at set point for the 25-14 final.

The second set was more evenly matched as the teams battled back and forth. Down 13-11 the Trolls scored the next six points, two of which were on ace serves by Mike Karl. Trinity continued to hold the lead, but Dordt closed in at 21-19 and was only a point back at 22-21. After trading points the Trolls ended the set on a kill and service ace by Eddie Binion.

The score was close in the early part of the third set and midway through the set the teams were tied at 13-13. Trinity tool a 15-14 lead and then rallied of five points to increase the scoring gap to six points. The lead increased to as many as eight points and ended in a 25-18 difference.

The Trolls finished the match with 34 kills and .143 attacking percentage. Dordt had 19 kills, but committed 23 errors. The Trolls posted eight blocks and the Defenders had seven. Trinity also scored eight points from ace serves. Binion led the team with nine kills and Danny Lawrence had seven. Zach Fitch registered five blocks and Dan Ryan had three. Karl collected 14 digs. Mike Quiroz had 17 assists and Lawrence had nine.

Trinity plays next in a conference match on March 6 at St. Ambrose University at 7 pm.
