Trolls Take Scarlet Hawks in Five Sets

For the second time this season Trinity battled in a five set match with Illinois Tech (Chicago, Illinois). While the Trolls came out on the losing end the first time, they turned that outcome around with a victory on their home court. The match seesawed back and forth with Trinity taking sets one, 25-20, and three, 25-18, and Illinois Tech equalizing the match with sets two, 25-23, and four, 25-22. The fifth set belonged to the Trolls as they posted a 15-9 win. The team improves to 7-10 overall.

In the first set the Trolls went on a three point run behind three ace serves by Eddie Binion to take a 8-6 lead. From that point on the team did not give up the lead. Ahead at 19-17 Trinity rallied off three points to make the gap five. There were able to hold that difference for the 25-20 win.

Trinity and Illinois Tech were never separated by more than two points through the entire second set. Tied at 21-21 the Trolls gave up the next two points. The Scarlet Hawks reached set point at 24-22 and Trinity put the pressure on as they gained the next point on a kill by Jonathan Poortinga. Illinois Tech was able to answer with a kill for the 25-23 final.

In the third set Trinity trailed by one point at 12-11, but Binion came up with three straight kills to push the team to a 14-12 lead. The team used that momentum to take control of the set and to continue to pull away. They finished with the largest margin win of the match at 25-18.

Trinity had the lead in the fourth set at 11-8, but committed a series of errors to fall behind at 12-11. Through the next few points each team took over the top spot. Late in the game the Scarlet Hawks were up 22-20 and again at 23-21. The teams traded kills to make it 24-22 and a service error by the Trolls gave Illinois Tech the win.

In the final set Trinity rallied to a 6-2 start. Illinois Tech came back to tighten the score to 8-6. The Trolls stayed ahead and at 12-9 finished out the final three points with three block kills. Poortinga was involved in each of those blocks.

The Trolls had 62 kills for the match with a .345 attacking percentage. Illinois Tech also had 62 kills with a .241 percentage. Trinity took control at the net with 14 blocks while the Scarlet Hawks had five. Binion ended the match with 17 kills, four blocks, and four aces. Poortinga had 13 kills, a .571 attacking percentage, and nine blocks. Zach Fitch collected 11 kills and five blocks. Danny Lawrence handed out 24 assists and had 11 digs. Mike Quiroz had 27 assists and seven digs.

Trinity will play at home again on March 2 in a 7 pm match with Dordt College.
