Trolls Tame Cougars

After dropping a conference match earlier in the week, the Trolls came back with a CCAC victory over Saint Xavier University (Chicago, Illinois).  The team gained the victory in three sets with scores of 25-19, 25-15, and 25-23. With the win the Trolls are 6-9 overall and 2-4 in the CCAC.

The Trolls were strong at the net offensively and defensively as they posted a .306 attacking percentage and had 14 blocks. The first point of the game for Trinity was earned on a block by Caleb Leake and Zach Fitch. From that 1-0 lead the Trolls never trailed in the set. Tied at 10-10 they gained some room on a four point run. The team maintained a slight scoring edge and finished with the 25-19 win.

Trinity took the early lead in the second set and went ahead 11-5. Again they continued to hold off the Cougars and had a 21-14 advantage late in the game. Two service aces by Danny Lawrence followed by a kill by Eddie Binion put the team at set point. The Trolls gave up one point before they finished the set at 25-15 on a kill by Ben Tocila.

The third set was much tighter and the Trolls trailed until a four point run gave them a 10-9 lead. The score was tied multiple times in the remainder of the match with the deadlock at 19-19. A kill and two blocks that each involved Jonathan Poortinga gave the Trolls the next three points for the 22-19 lead. A few points later the Trolls had a 23-22 edge.  An attack by Lawrence created set point and the team later finished on an attack by Fitch.

The Trolls ended the match with 32 kills and Saint Xavier had 31. Trinity also posted five aces and 21 digs. Binion led the team with 11 kills. Poortinga had seven kills and seven blocks. Also with seven blocks was Fitch while Lawrence had five. Lawrence and Mike Quiroz split the setting duties with 15 and 14 assists respectively. Mike Karl picked up seven digs.

The team is next in action on February 27 at home against Cardinal Stritch University.
