Trinity Drops Two Matches in Greenville Triangular

The Trolls played in two competitive matches in the Greenville Triangular (Greenville, Illinois). In their first match they faced Mount Mercy University and fell in three sets at 23-25, 23-25, and 14-25. Their second match was a five set loss to the host teams. The scores were 25-20, 20-25, 25-23, 17-25, and 15-12. The Trolls are now 5-8 for the season.

In the first set the Trolls rolled to a 6-3 lead, but Mount Mercy reversed that result to tie the set at 9-9. Trinity went back on top on the next point and continued to hold the lead until late in the set when the Mustangs went ahead at 21-20. Trinity tied the set on the next point and the teams were deadlocked again at 22-22 and 23-23. A Trinity service error gave Mt. Mercy set point and the Mustangs finished the set on a kill.

The second set was also a close fight. The Trolls trailed by a point or two through most of the set and could not get the top spot. Behind at 22-20 they scored the next two points. After Mt. Mercy gained one point, the Trolls once again tied the set at 23-23 on a kill by Jonathan Poortinga. The Mustangs went ahead on a kill and then took the set on an attacking error by Trinity.

Down two sets, the Trolls were never in the third set as they fell behind 10-4. By the time the Trolls hit double digits they trailed by 11 at 21-10. The team ended with an 11 point loss.

For the match Trinity had 31 kills with a .098 attacking percentage while Mt. Mercy had 39 kills with a .279 attacking percentage. The Trolls had 23 digs and three blocks and the Mustangs had 28 digs and five blocks. Ben Tocila led the team with 11 kills while Poortinga had seven. Mike Quiroz ended with 27 assists and Mike Karl had 10 digs.

The second match with Mt. Mercy was a battle through all five sets. Trinity gained the advantage in the first set as they started out with a 10-6 lead. They did not give up the top spot, but Greenville tied the set at 17-17. The Trolls scored the next four points behind three kills and a block and kept their lead for a 25-10 win.

There were multiple ties in the second set, but at 18-18 Trinity gave up the next three points to fall behind. They did not make up that difference and lost at 25-20.

The third set was even closer and came down the final points. At a 19-19 tie Trinity took the lead on back-to-back kills by Zach Fitch and Poortinga. The Trolls stayed ahead and reached set point at 24-21. Greenville held them for two points before the Trolls took the win.

The fourth set had the widest scoring margin and it was not in favor of the Trolls. Early in the match Greenville rallied off six points to take an 11-5 lead. For the remainder of the set the Trolls did not get any closer than five points for the 25-17 loss.

In the deciding set the Trolls had to play from behind the entire set. They tied the set at 8-8 and each point after that until 11-11. However they gave up the next three points to fall behind at 14-11. One final kill brought them to 14-12, but Greenville answered with a kill to finish the set and the match.

Each team had 56 kills for the match, but Trinity ended with a .155 attacking percentage and Greenville hit at .201 percent. The Panthers also tallied 16 blocks to the Trolls’ nine.  Tocila ended the match with 17 kills, Binion had 13, and Fitch had 12. Karl ended with 14 digs and Binion had 10. Danny Lawrence handed out 43 assists, 12 digs, and four blocks.

The team is next in action on February 13 at home in a conference match with Judson University.
