Trolls Fall in Four Sets

The Trolls pushed the Eagles of Robert Morris University (Chicago, Illinois) to four sets before taking a loss. Trinity took the early advantage with a 25-18 win in the first set. The second set went into extra points before the Trolls fell at 28-26. The third set was a battle, but ended in a 25-21 loss and the Trolls dropped the final set at 25-17 for the match loss. The team is 5-6 overall and 1-3 in the CCAC.

In the first set the Trolls took over the match midway through play when they rallied off three points to change a tie to a 12-9 lead. The team continued to stay on top and went ahead by as many as seven points at 23-16. It was that seven point difference that held at the end of the set.

Trinity continued to play well in the second set as they teams battled back and forth.  Late in the game the Trolls took a 23-21 lead, but the Eagles tied the score with the next two points.  Each team did what they could to get the win as the final eight points were all scored on kills. Trinity has set point at 24-23, but Robert Morris had set points at 25-24 and 26-25. A kill by Jonathan Poortinga tied the set at 26-26, but the Eagles finished out with the final two points.

The third set was another fight that came down to only a few points. Trinity fell behind midway through the set at 11-7 and could not make up the difference. Robert Morris reached set point at 24-19, but the Trolls held them for two points before the set ended at 25-21.

The Trolls fell behind 7-5 in the early part of the fourth set and lost ground as the set moved on. They were down by nine at 18-9 and could not recover.

For the match the Trolls had 53 kills with a .278 attacking percentage. Robert Morris posted 63 kills with a .301 attacking percentage. Trinity ended with 12.5 blocks and the Eagles had six blocks.  Eddie Binion led the team with 19 kills. Poortinga had a big match with 13 kills with a .600 attacking percentage and four blocks. Also making a difference at the net was Zach Fitch with six blocks and Danny Lawrence had five. Mike Quiroz ended with 45 assists and Mike Karl had 11 digs.

The team will play in a triangular at Greenville University on February 10.
