Trolls Get Two Wins in Trinity Triangular

The Trolls played in two matches in their Trinity Triangular and came away with two victories. In the morning competition they defeated Campbellsville University (Kentucky) in three sets with scores of 25-20, 26-24, and 25-17. The Trolls also posted a three set victory in their afternoon match with 25-17, 25-18, and 25-14 scores over Maranatha Baptist University (Watertown, Wisconsin). With the wins Trinity improves to 5-5 for the season.  

Trinity started the day with a three set win over Campbellsville. The Trolls had a good start and took an 11-5 lead. The Tigers came back to tighten the set at 15-13 before two kills by the Trolls gave them a four point cushion again. Campbellsville rallied to get back to within one, only to have Trinity answer with four straight points for a 21-16 lead. From there the Trolls finished the set at 25-20.

The second set was a tight battle throughout with multiple ties. Late in the match the score was deadlocked at 23-23. A kill by Jonathan Poortinga put the Trolls at set point, but an attack error created a 24-24 tie. Campbellsville gave the Trolls the final two points on a service error and an attacking error.

In the third set The Trolls had a 9-6 lead. At 12-8 the Trolls rallied off four points to create a 16-8 gap. From there Trinity continued to hold off the Tigers and maintain a few point lead. At 23-17 Trinity finished out the set and the match with kills by Eddie Binion and Caleb Leake.

The Trolls ended the match with 41 kills behind a .308 attacking percentage. Campbellsville had 34 kills and a .106 percentage. Each team had five blocks. Binion led the Trolls with 12 kills while Poortinga and Djordje Novakovic each had 10. Novakovic ended with four blocks and Poortinga had three. Mike Quiroz finished with 36 assists and Mike Karl had nine digs.

Trinity made it a pair of wins for the day with a three set victory over Maranatha. In the first set the Trolls led from start to finish. They did not open up the set until they took a 13-7 lead. The gap got as wide as nine points after two service aces by Danny Lawrence to make it 20-111. The Trolls final two points of the set came on blocks by Poortinga and Matthew Butnariu.

The second set was much close in the early stages, but Trinity went on a four point run to take an 11-7 lead. From there they continued to hold off the Sabercats as they posted the seven point victory.

The Trolls scored points in bunches in the third set and on a couple of scoring runs took an 11-5 lead. The team continued to pull away from Maranatha as the set progressed and a variety of players got into the action.

For the match Trinity had 37 kills and a .242 attacking percentage and Maranatha had 21 kills with a .013 attacking percentage. The Trolls had eight blocks and five ace serves. Binion ended with nine kills and Ben Tocila had seven. Poortinga added six kills and five blocks. Karl topped the dig column with nine.

In the other match of the triangular Campbellsville defeated Maranatha in three sets at 25-18, 25-20, and 25-20.

The Trolls play next in a conference match at Robert Morris University on February 6 at 7 pm.
