Trolls Defeat Calumet-St. Joseph

The Trolls got their first conference win of the season in a match at Calumet College of St. Joseph (Whiting, Indiana).  The first two sets were very tight with the opening one going to the Crimson Wave at 25-21 and the second going to Trinity at 25-22. The Trolls took over the next two sets with 25-15 and 25-17 victories to get the win. The team is now 3-5 overall and 1-2 in the CCAC.

Through the majority of the first set the teams were only separating by one or two points. Late in the set a kill by Ben Tocila tied the score at 21-21. The Trolls did not score again and fell with a 25-21 loss.

The second set followed much the same pattern as the fist with neither team gaining an advantage. After a 19-19 tie the Trolls scored the next two points for a slight edge. They continued to stay on top and, on an ace serve by Mike Karl, they reached set point at 24-21. The team gave up one point before finishing the set on a kill by Jonathan Poortinga.

The Trolls used their momentum of the win in the second set to jump to a 10-4 lead in set three.  They continued to add points in bunches while limiting the Crimson Wave to one point at a time. The Trolls rallied to a 25-15 win.

The early part of the fourth set was close until the Trolls rallied off five points to take a 12-7 lead. Another rally increased their lead to 17-10. The Crimson Wave came back to close to 17-14, but the Trolls answered and put the set away on a four point run that changed a 20-16 lead to 24-16. A kill by Poortinga eventually ended the set and the match.

For the set the Trolls had 39 kills with a .217 attacking percentage and Calumet-St. Joseph had 30 kills. Trinity was defensively strong at the net with 11.5 blocks to the Crimson Waves’ one.  Eddie Binion led the team with 12 kills and eight digs. Poortinga ended with 10 kills and six blocks. Zach Fitch added nine kills while Karl had 16 digs. Mike Quiroz finished the match with 34 assists.

The Trolls host the Trinity Triangular on February 3. They will play in match at 10 am and 3 pm.
