Trolls Take Two Against Mustangs

At the conclusion of their season the Trolls played in two matches at Mount Mercy University (Cedar Rapids, Iowa). It was a positive ending to the season as the team posted two victories. The first match against the Mustangs was a four set win with scores of 17-25, 25-22, 25-21, and 25-17. The Trolls followed with a three set win in the second match at 25-13, 25-22, and 25-13. With the matches the team concludes their season with at 10-14 overall record.  

The Trolls started out slowly in the morning match and fell behind in the first set at 7-0 and had to fight that deficit for the rest of the set. They could not overcome that gap and fell 25-17. They recovered in the second set which was a closer fight. After a 15-15 they faltered slightly to trail at 22-20, but finished strong as they rallied off the final five points for the win.

Once they had the momentum the Trolls built on it on in the third set. They gained a few point advantage midway through the set and continued to hold that lead. In the end they took the four point win. Trinity took control of the fourth set and doubled the Mustangs’ score at 20-10. Mount Mercy closed the gap to five at 22-17, but the Trolls ended the set and match on three consecutive kills by Zach Kirkilas, Ben Tocila, and Jonathan Poortinga.

The team ended with 48 kills and Mount Mercy had 40 kills. They had 43 digs and three blocks. Nick Costa and Mike Karl each had 12 kills and five digs. Tocila added eight kills and eight digs. Conor Sullivan led the dig category with 16 digs and Danny Lawrence had 38 assists.

In the afternoon match the Trolls controlled the play. They jumped to an 8-2 led and still had a sizable advantaged at 16-8. Trinity continued to double Mustangs’ score at 22-11 and the ended in the 25-13 win.

The Trolls trailed early in the second set only to tie the score at 17-17. They fell behind at 22-20, but held the Mustangs there. Trinity rallied off the next final five points to take the win.

At the beginning of the final set the teams were tied at 7-7. The Trolls took over the set as they scored the next eight points to go ahead 15-7. From there they took 20-9 lead and eventually posted the 12 point victory.

The team had a total of 35 kills in the match and the Mustangs had 25. The team also tallied 53 digs and 10 blocks. Karl registered nine kills and seven digs. Nick Costa had an all-around game with eight kills, 17 digs, and four blocks. Zach Fitch helped offensively and defensively at the net with six kills and six blocks.  Lawrence had 27 assists and five blocks.
