Trinity Denied by Robert Morris

It was Senior Night for the Trolls in their final home match for the year. In the last conference match of the regular season Trinity hosted the top conference team and nationally ranked No. 8 Robert Morris University (Chicago, Illinois). The team stayed in contact with the Eagles, but lost the match in three sets at 25-20, 25-18, and 25-17. With the loss the Trolls are 8-14 overall and end their conference schedule with a 1-9 record.

While the Trolls trailed throughout the first set, they were within a couple of points through the early going. The scoring gap started to increase as the set continued and Trinity went from an 11-9 deficit to an 18-13 difference. It was that five point scoring margin that held at the end of the set with a 25-20 final.

The second set was much the same as Trinity trailed be a handful of points and could not make up the difference. They were within a point at 16-15 only to fall behind 19-15. The team was still within four at 22-18, but Robert Morris finished with the final three points to take the set.

The Trolls fell into a 9-2 deficit in the third set and midway through the set were down by 10 at 15-5. The scoring gap increased to 13 points at 22-10 before the Trolls went on a scoring run with Zach Kirkilas at the serving line to close to 22-16. However the team only gained one more point before the Eagles finished out the set.

Trinity ended the match with 24 kills and Robert Morris had 43. The Trolls had 34 digs and 4.5 blocks for the evening. Mike Karl led the team with six kills while Zach Fitch, Kendall Toren, and Kirkilas each had four. Conor Sullivan recorded 12 digs and Danny Lawrence ended with 17 assists.

The Trolls play next on March 31 in an exhibition match at Lincoln College and they are at Mount Mercy University on April 1 for two matches.
