Trinity Defeated by Graceland
In their sixth match in ten days the Trolls hosted Graceland University (Lamoni, Iowa) in a non-conference match. The team continues in their recent struggle to find the win column as they lost the match in three set with scores of 25-19, 25-23, and 25-21. With the loss they fall below the .500 mark for the first time this season with a 7-8 record.
In the first set the Trolls picked up points one at a time while Graceland scored in spurts. As a result Trinity fell behind at 9-4. Trinity pulled to with one at 10-9, but the Yellowjackets rallied off the next seven points to open up the match at 17-9. Trinity closed the gap to four points late in the match, but could not erase the deficit.
Kills were hard to come by in the second set for the Trolls. However they hung in the set and kept the Yellowjackets from finding their rhythm. Late in the set the score was tied at 19-19 before Graceland scored the next two points for the lead. The Trolls fought to stay alive and were within one at 23-22 and again at 24-23, but the Yellowjackets put the ball away for the final say.
Trinity fell into a few point gap early in the third set and had to fight that deficit throughout the set. On a four point run they pulled to within one as 12-11. Graceland held off the Trolls and started to pull away for a seven point difference late in the set. At 24-17 Trinity had one last charge and scored four straight points before the match ended.
Trinity had 26 kills with a .118 attacking percentage and Graceland recorded 43 kills on a .191 percentage. The Trolls had 10.5 blocks to Graceland’s 4.5. Nick Costa led the team with nine kills and nine digs. Mike Karl added six kills. Danny Lawrence led the digs with 11 and Jonathan Poortinga ended the match with eight blocks.
The Trolls compete next on March 10-11 in the Campbellsville University Invitational.
