Trolls Drop Match at St. Ambrose
The Trolls took a road trip to Davenport, Iowa to take on St. St. Ambrose University in a conference match. Trinity found the Fighting Bees, a team receiving votes in NAIA poll, too tough to beat on their own court and fell in three sets at 25-20, 25-14, 25-21. The loss ends a three-match winning streak for the Trolls and gives them a 6-2 overall and 1-2 CCAC record.
In the early part of the first set the teams were tied at 6-6 until St. Ambrose rallied off the next four points on four Trinity errors. The scoring gap remained between 4-5 points for the majority of the rest of the set. The Trolls pulled to within three late in the set at 23-20, but could not completely erase the deficit.
Trinity had a slow start to the second set and fell behind at 8-3. They still trailed midway through the set at 17-10. St. Ambrose continued to gain points 3-4 at a time to take the 25-14 win.
In the third set the Trolls once again fell behind early. Trailing 15-10, they rolled off the next five points to tie the score. St. Ambrose answered with the four straight points to make it 19-15. Trinity was down by six at 24-18 and made it interesting when they scored the next three points to push the score to 24-21 before the Fighting Bees had the final say.
For the match the Trolls had 23 kills with a .100 attacking percentage. St. Ambrose doubled that offensive production with 46 kills and a .292 attacking percentage. Trinity also had 38 digs, three aces, and five blocks. Nick Costa ended the match with six kills and 11 digs and Mike Karl had six kills and seven digs. Ben Tocila added five kills and had four blocks. Ryan Bakke tallied eight digs.
The Trolls play next on February 10 at home against Lawrence Technological University at 7 pm.
