NAIA National Volleyball Championship Schedule Set

The field and schedule have been set for the 39th Annual NAIA National Volleyball Championship presented by Delta Hotels. Trinity, along with the other 11 Opening Round winners, the 19 teams who received first round byes, and host school Morningside (Iowa), will form the 32-team field for the national tournament at the Tyson Event Center in Sioux City, Iowa, from November 27-December 1. It is the second final site national tournament appearance for the Trolls, who also qualified in 2013.

The tournament teams are divided into eight pools of four teams each with each playing the other teams in their pool in the first three days of competition on November 27-29.  The Trolls are in Pool D with No. 4 Missouri Baptist University, No. 13 Hastings College (NE), and No. 20 Ottawa University (KS).

Trinity’s pool play schedule is:
November 27 (Tuesday) – vs Missouri Baptist at 9 am
November 28 (Wednesday) – vs Hastings at 12 pm
November 29 (Thursday) – vs Ottawa at 10 am

The top two teams from each pool will advance to the single-elimination bracket starting on November 30. The championship match will take place on December 1 at 7 pm.

Trinity (29-9)hosted their Opening Round match against Bellevue University (Nebraska), the team they defeated in 2013 to advance to the final site for the first-time in the program’s history. The Trolls, who are receiving votes in the NAIA Coaches’ Poll, defeated the Bruins in three sets with scores of 25-22, 25-21, and 25-16. Trinity finished in second place in their conference at 15-2 and earned their Opening Round bid as the conference tournament runner-up.  

Missouri Baptist (31-4) is making their 10th national tournament appearance.  A year ago they were undefeated in Pool Play and advanced to the semifinals before losing to the national champion Lindsey Wilson. The Spartans, who lost in their American Midwest Conference (AMC) tournament semifinal round, received the first at-large bid to the national tournament as the No. 4 ranked team in the NAIA. They received an Opening Round bye.

Hastings (19-6) advanced to the final site with an at-large bid as the No. 13 ranked team in the nation and with an Opening Round bye. The Broncos, who finished third in the Great Plains Athletics Conference (GPAC), lost in their conference tournament semifinal round.  They are making their 13th appearance at the NAIA national tournament. A year ago they were 3-0 in Pool Play but lost in the Round of 16.

Ottawa (27-10) is making their fourth straight and fifth overall trip to the national tournament.  A year ago they were 0-3 in the Pool Play. The Braves earned their automatic bid to the national tournament as the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) tournament champions. They advanced to the final site with a three set win over Indiana University-Northwest in the Opening Round, which they hosted.
