Trolls To Host Bellevue In NAIA Opening Round

The Trolls will host Bellevue University (Bellevue, Nebraska) in the NAIA National Championship Opening Round on November 17 at 7 pm.  Trinity received an automatic bid to the national tournament as the conference tournament runner-up. Bellevue advanced to Opening Round an at-large bid after losing in their conference tournament semifinal match.

The 2018 NAIA women’s Volleyball National Championship presented by Delta Hotels consists of a field of 44 teams. The top 19 teams, plus the tournament host of Morningside College, automatically advance to the final site in Sioux City, Iowa. The remaining 24 teams play at 12 sites around the country in the Opening Round. The winners from the November 17 matches will join the other qualifiers for the 32-team Final Site field.  Teams that advance to Sioux City will be seeded into eight pools of four with pool play on November 27-29 to determine the top sixteen to move on to the single elimination tournament on November 20-December 1.   

Trinity (28-9) finished the regular season with a 26-8 record and in second place in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference at 15-2. They advanced to the CCAC Tournament Championship match where they lost to the No. 1 seed Saint Xavier University.  The team is making their second straight Opening Round appearance and fifth appearance overall. The Trolls, who are receiving votes in the NAIA Coaches’ Poll, defeated Bellevue earlier this season on October 12 in a tournament at Grand View University.

Bellevue (23-11), who is also receiving votes in the NAIA Coaches’ Poll, ended their season in second place in the North Star Athletic Association.  They fell to No. 3 Dakota State University in the semifinal match of their conference tournament.  The Bruins are making their 11th overall and third straight national tournament appearance. A year ago they advanced to the final site and finished 1-2 in the pool play.
