Trolls Head to Championship Match

The Trolls earn the right to play for a conference tournament championship title with a win over Indiana University-South Bend (South Bend, Indiana) in the semifinal round.  The No. 2 Trolls defeated No. 6 Titans in three sets with scores of 25-18, 26-24, and 25-19. The team advances to the championship match at No. 1 Saint Xavier University (Chicago). With the win Trinity earns an automatic bid to the NAIA Championship Opening Round as either the tournament champions or runner-up.

The first set of the semifinal match was fairly tight until the Trolls went on a 5-to-1 midway through the set to take a 14-9 lead. From there the team continued to stay ahead by a handful of points. At 23-18, the Trolls took the win on kills by Kacie Stoll and Ana Lambros.  

IU-South Bend used a couple of scoring runs to take a 13-8 lead in set two. With Lambros on the serving line the Trolls rallied off the next seven points to go ahead 15-13. The momentum swung back in favor of the Titans who regained the lead at 17-16 and reached set point at 24-20.  Trinity did not give up and held the Titans at set point. The Trolls earned the next six points on three kills and three blocks to snatch the 26-24 win.

In the third set the Trolls started to take over midway through the set and built a 17-12 lead. They continued to hold off the Titans and the scoring gap increased to seven points at 20-13. The Trolls reached set point at 24-17 and, after giving up two points, they finished on a kill by Lambros.

The Trolls had a total of 48 kills on a .250 attacking percentage. IU-South Bend had 37 kills and a .117 attacking percentage. Trinity was big at the net defensively with 11 blocks.  Sarah Kiwan led the team with 14 kills and a .560 attacking percentage. Lambros ended with 11 kills and 10 digs. Stoll registered 10 kills. Dani Van Laten handed out 38 assists and picked up 10 digs. Defensively the back row was led by Brianna Figueroa with 20 digs and the front row by Christa Veenstra with eight blocks.

The Trolls will play in the championship match at No. 1 Saint Xavier University on November 10 at 7 pm. Saint Xavier has already earned an automatic bid to the national tournament as the regular season champions. The second bid for the conference goes to the tournament winner or the runner-up if Saint Xavier wins the tournament.
