Trolls Take Tigers in Three Sets

The Trolls take sole possession of first place in the South Divisions standings of the conference with a win over Olivet Nazarene University (Bourbonnais, Illinois). Trinity needed only three sets to defeat the Tigers with the margin of victory progressively increasing with each set. The final scores were 25-22, 25-20, and 25-17. With the win the Trolls are 24-8 overall and 14-2 in the CCAC.

In the first set the Trolls took the lead in the opening points and remained on top throughout the set. Late in the set they had a 22-16 lead, but the Tigers closed the gap at 22-19. The Trolls reached set point at 24-20 only to have Olivet Nazarene hold on for two more points before a kill by Madysen Zula gave the Trolls set point.

Trinity jumped to a big lead in the second set and went ahead at 15-5. Olivet Nazarene gained some ground, but the Trolls were still up by five at 22-17. The Tigers continued to hang on and fight as they pulled to within three. A service error gave the Trolls set point at 24-20 and a block by Zula and Kacie Stoll gave them the win.

The Trolls once again took the top spot in the third set and made the Tigers chase them.  Late in the set Trinity had a four point advantage at 20-16, but they rallied off the next four points to make the difference eight. The Tigers got one kill before the Trolls finished on a kill by Zula.

For the match the Trolls had 38 kills with a .231 attacking percentage and Olivet Nazarene had 40 kills with a .181 attacking percentage. Trinity ended with 66 digs and 8.5 blocks while the Tigers had 62 digs and six blocks. Stoll led the team with 14 kills, five blocks, and 15 digs. Zula also registered five blocks. Dani Van Laten tallied 29 assists and had 17 digs.

The Trolls play next on November 1 at home against Calumet College of St. Joseph at 7 pm.
