Trolls Take Three Matches in CCAC Crossover

Over the weekend the Trolls played in the first of the season’s two CCAC Crossover Tournaments.  Playing at Trinity International University, the team posted victories in their three matches to remain perfect in the CCAC at 8-0.  They defeated Roosevelt University in three sets, Trinity International in four sets, and Cardinal Stritch University in four sets. The team is 15-6 overall and at the top of the CCAC standings.

The Trolls started play on Friday night with a three set win over Roosevelt. Trinity held the Lakers to fewer than 18 points in each set. The set scores were 24-14, 25-17, and 25-16.

A four-run to start the first gave the Trolls the lead that they continued to hold throughout the rest of the set. On an ace serve by Ana Lambros the team took a 10 point lead and they were still ahead by 10 at 20-10. The team ended with the 11 point 25-14 win.

The Trolls once again took the early lead in the second set and built a 20-10 lead. The team finished with a 25-17 victory.  The third set was closer at the start, but Trinity pulled away from the Lakers as the set went on and posted the 25-16 victory.

The team ended the match with 29 kills and a .281 attack percentage. Kacie Stoll led the Trolls with 11 kills and Dani Van Laten had 20 assists and 10 digs.

The morning match on Saturday was against the host school Trinity International. The Trolls needed four sets to take down the Trojans, but came out with wins in scores of 25-14, 23-25, 25-20 and 25-20.

The team made a statement in the first set as they rolled to a 25-14 win. The second set changed things when the Trolls trailed through the entire set. They were down by as much as five late in the set and trailed at 24-20. Trinity held Trinity International for three points before taking the loss.

The team started with a 7-1 lead in the third set, but the Trojans tied the set at 9-9. Trinity ran off the next five points and continued to stay ahead for the five point win. With Van Laten on the service line, the Trolls jumped to a 7-0 start to set four. Trinity built a 19-8 lead before the Trojans closed to 19-15. Trinity stopped the run and finished for the win.

The Trolls had 50 kills with a .229 attacking percentage. Stoll ended with 19 kills and Lambros had 11 kills. Madysen Zula was involved in seven of the team’s 13 blocks. Anna Maatman posted 19 digs.

The final match against Cardinal Stritch was another four set match. Trinity easily took the first set with a 25-14 win. The team could not repeat that performance in the second set as the teams were within a few points of each other. The Wolves gained a slight edge and the Trolls could not make up the difference and took a 25-22 loss.

Trinity took over the again in the third set and cruised to a 25-13 win.  They repeated that production in the fourth set with a 25-14 win. The Trolls took control of that set on an eight point run with Van Laten on the service line.

Both teams ended with 43 kills, but the Trolls had a .273 attacking percentage and Cardinal Stritch was at .084 percentage. Stoll was again the leader with 16 and Lambros had 12. Zula and Christa Veenstra each had five blocks. Brianna Figueroa had 17 digs.

The Trolls play next on October 11 at Governors State University.
