Trolls Battle With Clarke

A non-conference match was a tough battle for the Trolls as they hosted Clarke University (Dubuque, Iowa). Each set went back and forth with no more than five points separating the teams in the final scores.  Trinity lost the first two sets at 25-21 and 26-24, before grabbing a 27-25 win in the third set to keep the match alive. The Trolls could not get the top spot in the fourth set and fell at 25-20. The team is now 9-4 for the season.

Both teams were on-point in the first set as Trinity hit .353 percent and Clarke had a .432 attacking percentage. As a result the score remained tight. A four point run by the Pride created a little bit of scoring distance as they took a 20-14 lead. Trinity scored the next four points to close the gap to 20-18. Trailing at 24-19, the Trolls held Clarke for two points before the set ended.

The attacking accuracy died down in the next set, but the intensity of play did not. Again only a couple of points separated the teams at any point. Down the stretch the teams were tied at 20-20 and each point after that until 24-24. Clarke gained set point on a kill and took the set on a Troll attacking error.

Each team had their share of the lead in the third set, but late in the set the teams were tied at 22-22. Trinity and Clarke each had opportunities to take the win as they reached set point, but could not finish. With a 25-25 tie the Pride committed two attacking errors to give the Trolls win.

The fourth set was more of the same story as the teams battled back and forth. Clarke gained a slight advantage with a 20-17 lead. The Trolls closed the gap to within two at 21-19, but the Pride scored four of the last five points for the win.

Trinity ended the match with a total of 47 kills and a .174 attacking percentage. Clarke had 69 kills and a .275 percentage. The Trolls registered seven blocks to the Pride’s one. Kacie Stoll led the team with 15 kills and three blocks.  Christa Veenstra also added three blocks. Dani Van Laten had 38 assists and 15 digs. Leading the back row play was Brianna Figueroa with 20 digs.

The Trolls play next on September 28-29 in the Olivet Nazarene University Invitational.
