Trolls Defeat Tigers

It was a back-and-forth fight, but the Trolls came out on top in a conference match at Olivet Nazarene University (Bourbonnais, Illinois). The first two sets went to extra points before a winner was determined. Trinity lost the first one at 31-29, but got the second one 28-26. The Trolls gained the advantage with a 25-22 win in the third set and then repeated that score in the fourth set for the win. The team improves to 8-3 overall and is 3-0 in the CCAC.

The teams were never separated by more than a few points in the first set. Neither team could pull away and the score was tied at 25-25 and each point after until 29-29. A kill by the Tigers created set point and an attacking error by the Trolls gave Olivet Nazarene the win.

In the second set the Tigers had the lead until a run with Dani Van Laten at the service line gave the Trolls a 15-14 edge. Trinity continued to hold a slight lead and reached set point at 24-22. However Olivet Nazarene held them and tied the set at 24-24, 25-25, and 26-26. A kill by Kacie Stoll followed by a kill by Ana Lambros ended the set in Trinity’s favor.

Trinity took the early lead in the third set and continued to hold it. They were ahead by as many as five points, but down the stretch the Tigers closed the gap to one point at 22-21. The Trolls scored the next two points to take the lead and finished the set at 25-22.

In the fourth set the teams took turns sharing the lead. The momentum went back and forth with the teams scoring in short runs. A kill by Christa Veenstra created a 20-20 tie. The Trolls scored the next three points to gain the advantage. They did not give up that top spot and finished the set and the match on a kill by Sarah Kiwan.

For the match the Trolls had a total of 61 kills and Olivet Nazarene had 64. Kacie Stoll led the team with 16 kills and Lambros had 12. Van Laten ended with 50 assists and had 18 digs. Brianna Figueroa led the digs with 28. Veenstra had her hand in four blocks.

The team continues conference action on September 20 in home match with the University of St. Francis at 7 pm.
