Trolls Top Cougars

The Trolls came out on top of a battle between two teams receiving votes in the NAIA Coaches’ Poll. It took five sets before Trinity got the win over Saint Xavier University (Chicago, Illinois) in a non-conference match. The match went back and forth through the first four sets. Trinity lost the first one 25-19, won the second 25-18, narrowly lost the third at 26-24, and evened the match with a 25-13 win in set four. The Trolls got the tie-breaker with a 25-9 win in the final set. The team is now 7-3 for the season.

Trinity fell behind early in the first set and was down 9-3. They never fully recovered from that deficit and lost the set by six points. The second set started much the same as the Trolls trailed 6-1 early. However this time a few scoring runs allowed them to make up the difference and take over the lead at 13-12. From there they continued to stay ahead for the win.

The Trolls trailed by a slight margin through most of the third set. Behind at 23-21 the Trolls scored the next two points on kills by Ana Lambros. The teams were again tied at 24-24 and Trinity could not hold on as the Cougars scored the final two points.

Trinity took over the fourth set and jumped to a 15-6 lead as they gained points by the handfuls.  They continued to dominate the set and kept the match alive with the 25-13 win.

In the deciding set the Trolls turned a 3-2 deficit into an 8-4 lead. Once ahead they to hold the top spot and eventually finished the match on a kill by Lambros.

For the match the team had 51 kills with a .210 attacking percentage. Saint Xavier ended with 56 kills and a .110 attacking percentage. The Trolls were big at the net defensively with 16 blocks. Lambros and Kacie Stoll each ended with 16 kills. Madysen Zula posted a total of eight blocks and Christa Veenstra had seven. Dani Van Laten ended with 41 assists, 12 digs, and five blocks. Brianna Figueroa was high in the dig category with 24.

The Trolls are next in action on September 18 at Olivet Nazarene University in a conference match.
