Trolls Get Three Wins in CCAC Crossover

The Trolls keep their conference record unblemished as they post three more victories in the CCAC Crossover Tournament hosted by Governors State University (University Park, Illinois). Trinity started their competition against the North Division teams with a three set win over Robert Morris University. They followed the next day with four set wins over Roosevelt University and Judson University.  With the 3-0 record from the weekend the team is 8-0 in the CCAC and 15-7 overall.

The Crossover competition started with a three set win over Robert Morris. Trinity led throughout the entire first set and cruised to a 25-12 win. The second set was much tighter with multiple ties. The final deadlock was at 22-22, but the Trolls scored the next two points to reach set point. They took the win at 25-23 on a missed served by the Eagles. The Trolls once again took control in the third set and on a six-point run went ahead at 16-10. From there they maintained their lead and finished with a 25-17 win.

The Trolls had 38 kills, eight blocks, six aces, and 42 digs for the match. Kacie Stoll led the team with 11 kills and Lydia Smits had 10. Dani VanLaten handed out 29 assists and had four aces. Brianna Figueroa had 13 digs and Christa Veenstra and Stoll each had five blocks.

Saturday’s competition began with a match against Roosevelt. The first three sets were decided by three points or less. Trinity had a narrow led throughout the first set and grabbed the win at 25-22. The Trolls fell behind at 14-9 in the second set, but rallied back to tie the score at 19-19. Roosevelt went back on top and reached set point at 24-21. Trinity held them for two points before losing at 25-23. In the third set it was the Trolls who took a 20-13 lead and had to hold off the Lakers. Trinity stopped Roosevelt’s rally and took the 25-22 win.

With the 2-1 set advantage the Trolls took control of the fourth set and cruised to a 25-14 win.

For the set the Trolls had 60 kills and a .314 attaching percentage. They were led by Stoll with 16 kills while Britta Heggeland had 13 and Veenstra had 12. Veenstra also had seven blocks and Stoll had five.  VanLaten ended with 49 assists and Figueroa had 16 digs.

The Trolls needed four sets in their final match to get a win over Judson. Trinity had the slight edge throughout the first set and took the 25-21 win. They completely controlled the second set and with multiple scoring runs cruised to a 25-13 win.

The team could not put the match away in the third set as Judson fought back. The score was tied at 17-17, but Judson scored the next two points and the Trolls could not get back on top. They ended in a 25-22 loss. In the final set the scoring difference was within a couple of points the entire set. Trinity was on the plus side the scoreboard and did not give up their top spot. With a 25-22 win they took the set and the match.

The Trolls had a total of 62 kills for the match with a .217 attacking percentage. Veenstra led the team with 16 kills while Stoll and Smits each had 14 kills. VanLaten ended with 54 assists and Figueroa had 26 digs.  

Trinity plays next on October 12 in a home match with Governors State University at 7 pm.
