Trolls Battle to Five Set Win with Marian

The Trolls posted a perfect record in the Saint Xavier/Trinity Crossover with a win over Marian University (Indianapolis, Indiana), a team receiving points in NAIA Coaches Preseason Poll. The match was highly competitive and pushed to five sets before Trinity came out as the winner. The set scores were 28-26, 17-25, 25-21, 20-25, and 15-10. The Trolls ended the weekend with a 3-0 record and they are now 3-5 for the season.

The first match was the closest and needed extra points to determine a winner. The Trolls had the opportunity to take the set in regulation when they reached set point at 24-22. However Marian scored the next three points to put the Trolls down by one. Trinity tied the set at 25-25 and the teams were also deadlocked at 26-26. A kill by Dani Van Laten gave the Trolls a 27-26 advantage and an attack error by Marian gave the Trolls the win.

The Trolls faltered in the second set and took the eight point loss. They came back in the third set and pulled away midway through the set. Marian made a run at the end, but Trinity held them off.

In the fourth set the Trolls fell behind at 19-10. They were able to close to within five before the set ended, but with the loss the match was tied at two sets apiece.

In the fifth deciding set the Trolls trailed at 4-3, but rallied off the next four points to take at 7-4 lead. They keep Marian at a distance and with a three point run late in the set, they created a 14-9 lead. After giving up one point they ended the set on a kill by Lydia Smits.

For the match the team had 58 kills with Kacie Stoll recording 21 and Lydia Smits getting 12. Danielle Oeverman had her hand in five blocks and Stoll had four. Both Smits and Stoll had 15 digs and Brianna Figueroa had 13. Van Laten ended with 47 assists.

The Trolls play next on September 7 in their conference opener at Governors State University.
