Trolls Take Two In First Day of Saint Xavier/Trinity Crossover

In front of packed gym with fans hyped to see the 2017 women’s volleyball team in action for the first time this season as well as to see the new Troll image that was revealed at the match, the Trolls did not disappoint as they posted their first two wins of the season. In the opening match of the Saint Xavier/Trinity Crossover the team defeated Bethel College (Mishawka, Indiana) in three sets. In the final match of the evening the Trolls were victorious over Mount Mercy University (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) in three sets.  Trinity is now 2-5 for the season.

The Trolls started the Bethel match with a service ace by Dani Van Laten and never gave up the lead in the set. They rolled to a 25-14 win. Trinity started the second set on a 10-1 run and finished with a 25-10 win.

The third set was tighter through the first part of the set until the Trolls rallied off five straight points to take a 17-11 lead. From there they grabbed the 25-17 win.

For the match the Trolls had a total of 38 kills while Bethel had 15. Kacie Stoll and Anna Maatman each had 10 and Danielle Oeverman had eight. Dani Van Laten ended with 32 assists, five ace serves, and six digs. Leading the dig column was Brianna Figueroa with 15 while Stoll and Maatman each had 10.

Against Mount Mercy in set one the Trolls were ahead at 11-10, but took control of the set on an eight point run for a 19-10 lead. They ended with a 25-17 win.

The second set was the pivotal set and thriller for the evening. Trinity led through the entire set and had set point at 24-22. However Mount Mercy scored the next two points to keep the set alive. The Mustangs then turned the tables and reached set point at 26-25. Kills by Stoll and Oeverman put the Trolls back on top and when a Mustang attack sailed out of bounds, the Trolls took the 28-26 win.

With the two set advantage and the momentum in their favor, the Trolls were able to control the final set and take the win with at 25-14.

Trinity recorded 38 kills for the match with Stoll tallying 14 and Oeverman with 10. Figueroa had 19 digs and Lydia Smits had 13. Van Laten recorded 30 assists for the match.

The Trolls will take on Marian University in the 9 am match of the Crossover action on Saturday, August 26.
