Season Opens in California

The 2017 season began for the Trolls at the Hope International/Vanguard Summer Slam in Fullerton, California. In the first day of the two-day invitational the team took on Eastern Oregon University and Hope International University. The Trolls played strong in their season debut, but dropped both matches to the tough competition. They lost in four sets to Eastern Oregon and in three sets to Hope International.

The Trolls had a good start and took the first set against preseason ranked #11 Eastern Oregon. After trailing through the first part of the set, the team rallied late in the set to take over the lead. The final eight points of the set were scored by kills on both sides, including two kills by Danielle Oeverman and two by Kacie Stoll that led to a 25-22 win.

The team never had the lead in the second set and fell 25-17. They trailed by a few points in the third set until Eastern Oregon took an eight point lead at 23-15 and the win at 25-19. Trinity fell behind early in the fourth set and never made up the ground for the 25-17 loss.

For the match Trinity had 47 kills with a .180 attacking percentage. Stoll led the way with 11 kills and Lydia Smits had 10. At the net defensively Oeverman had five blocks while Christa Veenstra and Stoll each had four. Also defensively, Brianna Figueroa collected 14 digs and Dani VanLaten had 11.

In the match against the host school the closest set was the first one which the Trolls pushed the score to 26-24 before losing. Trinity trailed throughout the set and was down at 23-20. They rallied off the next three points to tie the set and followed with a block by Veenstra and Stoll to take a 24-23 lead. Unfortunately the Trolls could not finish out and gave up the final three points for the loss.

The team did not recover from the first set and they dropped the second one at 25-20. They ended up losing the match in the next set at 25-18.

Trinity had 29 kills behind a .114 attacking percentage. Stoll led the team with eight kills and five assists and Oeverman had six kills and three blocks. Veenstra led the team with eight blocks. Figueroa picked up 15 digs.

The team plays in two more matches in the invitational on Thursday, August 17. They take on Montana Tech at 10 am PST and Northwest University (WA) at 6 pm PST.
