Post-Season Honors for Women’s Soccer Athletes

With a national tournament still on the schedule, a number of the women’s soccer team members have already garnered recognition for the season.  Three individuals made the CCAC All-Conference Team and four were listed on the NCCAA North Central All-Region Team.  In addition 13 athletes in the soccer program earned scholar-athlete honors.

Leading the awards is Kayla Diemer (Alto, Michigan). The senior forward earned All-Conference honors for the third time in her career.  She also was named the NCCAA Region Player of the Year and a four-time member of that all-region team.  In addition, during the season she earned CCAC Player of the Week honors.

For the season Diemer is leading the team in points with 14 goals, including five game-winning goals, and 10 assists.  She led the conference in assist average and ranked in the top three in points, goals, and shots.  She is also third in the NCCAA national statistics in point average, ranking second in assists per game and sixth in goals per game.

Sophomore forward Jessica Bianchi (Elmhurst, Illinois) also received All-Conference and NCCAA All-Region honors. It is her second time on the North Central All-Region Team.  This year she is the team’s top goal scorer with 15 goals while ranking second with five assists.  In the conference she ranked third in points, second in goal average, and was in the top ten in assist average.  She is in the top five in points and goals in the NCCAA national rankings.

On the defensive side two players earned honors. Senior Samantha Burgess (Byron Center, Michigan) was named All-Conference Second Team and sophomore Elly Brummel (Hudsonville, Michigan) was NCCAA North Central All-Region. For the season they were instrumental in the team’s seven shut-outs and a third place conference ranking in shut-out average.  They led the defense which gave up only 22 goals in their 19 games and ranked fourth in goals allowed.

Joining her teammates on the NCCAA North Central All-Region Team was senior Tarryn South (Zeeland, Michigan).  As a midfielder South helped control the play on the field while scoring three goals and recording four assists.

The team’s excellence on the field extended into the classroom with a large number of players receiving scholar-athlete honors.  Junior Tori Rivas (Pasadena, California) is on the scholar-athlete list for the NAIA, NCCAA, and CCAC. Junior Brenna Cesmat (Gilbert, Arizona) is a NCCAA and CCAC scholar-athlete. Also receiving CCAC academic honors are Diemer, Brummel, Syke Bryant (Riverside California), Sierra Christopher (Irvine, California), Sarah Fenton (Temecula, California), Jessica Owen (Caledonia, Michigan), South, and junior varsity players Abigail Kleyn (Grandville, Michigan), Emily Lemmenes (Palos Heights, Illinois), Kailah Price (Sugar Grove, Illinois), and Anna Vander Wall (Marne, Michigan).

In addition to the players’ honor, Coach Josh Lenarz was named the NCCAA North Central Region Coach of the Year. He led the team to their current 10-6-3 record and a NCCAA national tournament appearance.  The team also was co-recipients of the CCAC Champions of Character award.
