Trinity Denied by Governors State

The Trolls faced Governors State University (University Park, Illinois) for the second time this season and for the second time the lost to the Jaguars. After the first quarter Trinity and Governors State were tied, but the Trolls were out-scored by 11 points in the second quarter to trail at 39-28 at the half. The Trolls stayed strong in the second half, but lost a little more ground to end in a 79-61 loss. The team is 3-20 for the season and 1-13 in the CCAC.

While the Trolls shot better than Governors State, they gave up too many points on second chances and also allowed the Jaguars to take advantage of their mistakes.  Those factors prevented the Trolls from sustaining their scoring efforts.

Trinity came out strong and for a good portion of the first period they held the lead. With two minutes to play in the quarter the team had an eight point lead. Governors State finished out with an eight point run to put the teams in a 21-21 deadlock at the end of the period.

The start of the second period did not go as well for the Trolls as Governors State went on a 10-to-0 run. Scoring only seven points in the quarter, Trinity fell behind by 11 at the half.

The scoring gap increased to 20 points in the first four minutes of the third quarter. The Trolls were able to cut it back to 13 by the end of the period.  The double-digit difference held throughout the final quarter as Trinity lost by 18 points.

The Trolls shot .415 percent from the floor, .444 percent from the arc, and .750 percent from the line. Governors State was .397 percent from the field, .400 percent from the three-point line, and .600 percent from the charity stripe. The Trolls had 34 rebounds and the Jaguars had 50 of which 29 were offensive. Breanna Toppen led the team with 16 points while Alexis Knake and Val Guzman each had 14. Knake and Alyssa Mulligan each had seven rebounds while Aubrey Goorman led the team with nine.

The Trolls play next on January 30 at Robert Morris University at 5 pm.
