Trolls Lose to Defenders

In the second day of competition in the Northwestern College Pizza Ranch Classic in Orange City, Iowa, the Trolls faced No. 13 Dordt College (Sioux Center, Iowa). The Trolls fought through the first half, but trailed by 12 points, 37-25, at the break. The game got away from Trinity in the second half and they ended in a 72-42 loss. Losing to two ranked teams in the tournament the Trolls are now 2-14 for the season.

As has been a pattern lately, the Trolls started out slowly to create an early game deficit. Five minutes into play they had scored only two points and were down by 10. By the end of the quarter the scoring difference was eight at 17-9.

Behind three treys early in the second quarter the Trolls quickly cut their deficit to six points. Trinity continued to stay in contact with Dordt and on a jumper by Breanna Topppen with three minutes left they had closed to five points at 29-24. However the team added only one more point in the quarter while the Defenders added eight to make it 37-25 at the half.

With limited shot attempts as Dordt controlled the boards, the Trolls had a difficult time closing the gap in the rest of the game.  Minutes into the third quarter the Defenders had a 19 point lead and by the end of the quarter the difference was 22, 56-34. The fourth quarter followed much the same pattern and the Trolls ended in a 30 point loss.

Trinity finished the game with a .293 field goal percentage, a .190 three-point percentage, and a .667 free throw percentage. Dordt shot .392 percent from the field, .143 percent from the arc, and .667 percent from the line. The Trolls had 30 rebounds to Dordt’s 58. Toppen led the team with 12 points while Aubrey Goorman added nine. Kyla Pitts ended with eight points, three assists, and three rebounds.

Trinity will play next in a conference game against Judson University at home on January 5 at 1 pm. Their game on January 2 with Indiana University-Northwest has been canceled.
