Trinity Loses at Clarke

In a non-conference game the Trolls played at Clarke University (Dubuque, Iowa).  Trinity led in the opening minutes, but lost that advantage midway through the first quarter and never got it back. The team was down by five at the end of the first quarter and down by 14 at the half, 50-36. The Trolls continued to slip further behind and at the end of the game they lost 90-74. The team is now 2-3 for the season.

The Trolls were playing without a couple of their inside players and it showed as they gave up 36 offensive boards. In addition, Kyla Pitts, a key starter, got into foul trouble midway through the second quarter and had to limit her minutes.

In the first quarter the score was tied six times with a deadlock at 18-18 with two minutes to play. Clarke finished the quarter on an 8-to-3 run to take a 26-21 lead.  The Pride kept their run going into the start of the second period and scored eight unanswered points for a 13 point lead.  That gap increased to as many as 19 points before a 50-36 half-time score.

Getting multiple second-chance points Clarke continued to pull away from the Trolls in the third quarter. Trinity lost ground in the 10 minute period and trailed by 18 at its end. Trinity kept playing hard and cut the difference to 11 points late in the game, but did not get any closer.

For the game the Trolls shot .366 percent from the field, .185 percent from the arc, and .708 percent from the line. Clarke was .421 percent from the floor, .360 percent from the three-point line, and .680 percent from the free throw line. The Trolls had 37 rebounds and Clarke had 61. Breanna Toppen led the Trolls with 22 points and three assists. Val Guzman had 17 points and six rebounds. Aubrey Goorman added 10 points and eight rebounds and Pitts had 11 points and four assists.

The Trolls’ next contest is their conference opener on November 14 at home against Governors State University at 5:30 pm.
