Win Slips Away From Trolls

On Fall Fest weekend the Trolls hosted Mount Vernon Nazarene University (Mount Vernon, Ohio). The team played well in front of their home crowd and held the lead for the majority of the game. At the half they established a 35-23 lead. The team continued to stay on top until the final two minutes of the game when Mount Vernon Nazarene went ahead and handed the Trolls a disappointing 58-56 loss.  The team is 2-1 for the season.

Trinity came out hot and shot .583 percent in the first quarter to take over the lead. Five minutes into the game they were ahead by double digits at 17-7. They continued to hold a sizable scoring margin and at the end of the period were ahead 24-15.

In the second period the scoring gap was reduced to five points, but Trinity allowed the Cougars only eight points in the period. By the half the Trolls held a 12 point lead at 35-23.

In the third period Mount Vernon cut the lead to seven points in the first three minutes, but the Trolls went on an 8-to-0 run surge ahead by 15. The lead got as large as 16 points until Cougars outscored the Trolls 9-to-2 in the final three minutes to make it 50-41 game at the end of the quarter.

The Cougars came on strong in the final period and made up the scoring gap. With four minutes to play the teams were tied at 54-54. On a steal and a lay-up Mount Vernon went ahead by two points, but the Trolls came right back on a lay-in by Kyla Pitts to deadlock the game at 56-56. With under a minute to play a pair of free throws for Mount Vernon gave them a two point lead.  Each team had one final attempt, but neither scored again as the Trolls came up two points short.

For the game the Trolls shot. 333 percent from the field, .250 percent from the arc, and .923 percent from the line.  Mount Vernon was .317 percent from the floor, .261 percent from the three-point line, and .600 percent from the free throw line. The Trolls had 41 rebounds and the Cougars had 49. Jasmine Elliott led the team with 21 points, five rebounds, four assists, and four steals. Breanna Toppen had 13 points and Kyla Pitts added 10. Brianna Markusic collected 11 rebounds and Aubrey Goorman had nine.

The Trolls are next in action on November 9 in a home game with Taylor University at 4 pm.
