Season Opens with a Victory

The Trolls opened their 2018-19 season with a home contest against Cornerstone University (Grand Rapids, Michigan).  The team made a good showing in their debut with an 81-69 win. They had a slight lead at the half at 34-32, but created some distance in the third quarter to increase the gap by 11. Cornerstone made a run early in the fourth quarter, but the Trolls held them off and took the double digit win.

In the first quarter of the game the teams worked out the opening game jitters and worked to find their rhythm. The score was tied three times in the 10 minute period and at the break Trinity had a 17-14 lead. The Trolls kept the top spot in throughout the second period and at the half their lead was two at 34-32.

With a 41-41 tie early in the third quarter, the Trolls went on a nine point run to pull away from the Golden Eagles. In the final three minutes the lead increased to double digits and it stay there at the end of the period at 59-48.

On a three-pointer by Breanna Toppen at the beginning of the fourth quarter the Trolls took their largest lead of the game. However Cornerstone scored the next nine points to decrease the gap to five, 62-57. Trinity quickly recovered and midway through the period they were back ahead by double digits. The team continued to hold off the Golden Eagles in the remaining time for the win.

The Trolls ended the game with a .394 field goal percentage and a .733 free throw percentage at 22-for-30. Cornerstone shot .450 percent from the floor. Trinity had 34 rebounds, 14 assists, and 17 steals while Cornerstone had 46 rebounds, 14 assists, and nine steals. Toppen led the team with 26 points and Jasmine Elliott had 21 points. Elliott was also the high rebounder with nine. Aubrey Goorman led the team with five steals and Kyla Pitts had five assists.

The team plays next on October 27 at Lincoln College at 2 pm.
