Trolls Defeat Mount Vernon Nazarene

The Trolls made it two wins in a row in their trip to Ohio with a victory at Mount Vernon Nazarene University (Mount Vernon, Ohio).  The team held a narrow margin at the half with a 24-23 lead.  Late in the game the extended they increased the scoring margin to double-digits and walked away with a 62-56 win. The Trolls are now 7-9 for the season.

It was a tight first quarter as the Trolls and the Cougars battled back and forth. At the end of the opening ten minutes the Trolls had a 14-13 lead. Each team added 10 points in the second quarter to keep the difference at half a one-point advantage for the Trolls at 24-23.

Trinity used their defensive pressure, which produced 17 steals for the game, to keep the Cougars from gaining momentum in the second half. The Trolls also converted a number of those steals into easy points. By the end of the third quarter they still held a slight lead at 36-33.

The scoring production picked up in the final quarter. Trinity pulled ahead and extended their lead to double digits. On a three-point play by Breanna Toppen with 1:13 to play the team was ahead 61-51. In the final seconds of the game the Cougars closed to within the final difference of six points.

For the game Trinity shot .368 percent from the field, .375 percent from the arc, and .700 percent from the free throw line. Mount Vernon Nazarene was .344 percent from the floor, .233 percent from the three-point line, and .500 percent from the charity stripe. The Trolls had 40 rebounds and the Cougars had 44. Ally Giampapa led the team with 18 points and nine rebounds. Toppen added 13 points and had five steals. Kelsie Foster was the high rebounder with 11 while also posting nine points and four steals. Celina Wanta added eight points, four rebounds, and three steals.

The Trolls are next in action on January 6 in a conference game at Judson University at 1 pm.
