Trolls Open Season with Victory

The 2017-18 basketball season officially started for the Trolls as they hosted Andrews University (Berrien Springs, Michigan) in their season opener. With a 22-7 lead after the first quarter the game was never in doubt and everyone was able to contribute to the first win of the season. By the half the Trolls were ahead 46-15 and at the game’s end they posted a 73-42 victory.

Four minutes into the first period the score was tied at 7-7, but the Trolls did not allow Andrews another bucket for the remainder of the period. With 15 unanswered points Trinity had a 22-7 lead.

Trinity continued to hold the Cardinals without a bucket for the opening four minutes of the second period.  In the final four minutes of the quarter the Trolls went on a 12-0 run to post a 31 point lead, 46-15 at the half.

The Trolls out-scored the Cardinals by four points in the third quarter to increase their lead to 63-28. The scoring margin stayed significant in the final quarter for the 31 point win.

Trinity ended the game with a .475 field goal percentage and a .846 free throw percentage. They grabbed 29 steals and forced their opponent into 41 turnovers. Ten different players scored for the Trolls with four in double-digits. Lauren Stokes and Celina Wanta led the team with 12 points each and Ally Giampapa had 11 and Val Guzman had 10. Wanta and Alexis Knake were the high rebounders with five each. Wanta also had six steals and Knake had five as did Megan Stubbs.

The Trolls will play again on October 30 in an exhibition game at Purdue University-Northwest at 6 pm.
