Trinity Edges out Governors State

The Trolls came out on the positive side of a conference game with Governors State University (University Park, Illinois).  Trinity led through the majority of the game, but had to hold off the Jaguars in the final quarter.  A three-pointer in the final seconds broke a tie and gave the Trolls a 71-69 win.  The victory moves the team to 8-8 overall and 3-6 in the CCAC.

Trinity hit a three-pointer to open the game, but then did not score again for the next five minutes to fall behind by eight points. They managed to get 14 more points before the end of the quarter and only trailed by three.

On a pair of free throws by Katie Moran with 7:30 to play in the second period the Trolls took over the lead and did not give it up for the rest of the game. They held the Jaguars without a point for the first five minutes of the quarter and increased their scoring gap to seven points. By half-time Trinity held a 32-28 lead.

The Trolls maintained a narrow lead through the majority of the third period until an 8-to-0 run created an 11 point difference.  At the quarter’s end Trinity was ahead by nine points.

Governor State chipped away at the Trolls’ lead in the fourth quarter and on a lay-up with 38 seconds left they tied the game at 68-68. Both teams had missed opportunities in their next possessions to keep the game in a deadlock. With seven seconds left Breanna Toppen nailed a three-pointer to put the Trolls ahead. The Jaguars gained one more point on the free throw line before time expired to make the final two point difference.

For the game Trinity shot .333 percent from the field and .684 percent from the line. Governors State was .396 percent from the floor and .703 percent from the line. The Trolls were out-rebounded 54-to35. Jessica Bianchi ended the game with 17 points, eight rebounds, and four steals. Celina Wanta was the high scorer with 18 points and she also had four steals. Lauren Stokes scored 13 points, collected six rebounds, and had five steals.
