Trolls Lose at Holy Cross

The Trolls start the 2017 year with a loss in a conference game at Holy Cross College (Notre Dame, Indiana). The team trailed by eight points at the half, but made up most of that difference in the third quarter. However they lost ground in the final quarter and ended in an 85-75 loss. The team is now 7-8 for the season and 2-7 in the CCAC.

A slow start to the game left the Trolls in a 10-2 deficit in the opening minutes. They soon found their rhythm and went on a 12-to-0 run to take a 14-10 lead. At the end of the first period the teams were tied 16-16.

The Trolls scored the first eight points of the second period to build a lead, but then were out-scored 20-to-4 in the rest of the period and trailed 36-28 at the half.

The third period was high scoring and the Trolls added 34 points to their total. They tied the game at 56-56 with 2:42 to play. Holy Cross went back on top and at the end of the period the Saints had a two- point lead at 64-62.

In the final period Holy Cross started with a 12-to-4 run to build a 10 point gap midway through the quarter. Trinity fell behind by as many as 12 points and closed to as few as five with 41 seconds to play. They could not completely make up the difference and ended in a 10 point loss.

The Trolls ended the game with a .366 field goal percentage, a .333 three-point percentage, and a .692 free throw percentage. They forced Holy Cross into 24 turnovers, but were out-rebounded by 19. The Saints shot .508 percent for the game and had 63 points coming from two players. Bethany Jansma led the team with 15 points and five rebounds. Celina Wanta scored 14 points and Lauren Stokes had 11 points and six rebounds.

Trinity plays again on January 5 at home against Governors State University at 5:30 pm.
