Trolls Defeat Roosevelt

The Trolls head into a short semester break on a positive note with a conference victory over Roosevelt University (Chicago, Illinois). The team led through a good portion of the game, but had to come from behind in the final quarter. The Trolls scored the final five points of the game for the victory and improve to 7-6 overall and 2-5 in the CCAC.

There was extremely good shooting from both teams as both the Trolls and the Lakers shot .500 percent from the field.  With the accurate shooting the teams battled back and forth in the first period and were tied four times. By the end of the quarter Trinity had a 20-19 lead.

The second quarter belonged to the Trolls who went ahead by as many as 11 points. By the half-time their lead was cut to six at 39-33.

In the opening five minutes of the third quarter Roosevelt made up the difference and tied the game at 47-47. The Lakes took a brief lead, but with a trey by Alexis Knake at the buzzer at the end of the period the Trolls were back on top at 57-55.

Roosevelt started the final period on a 12-to-2 run to take an eight point lead. The Trolls answered with a 10-to-2 run of their own to tie the game at 69-69 with three minutes to play. The teams were still deadlocked at 73-73 with a minute left. A lay-up by Bethany Jansma gave Trinity the lead.  On the next possession Jansma stole the ball, was fouled, and hit both charity throws for the four point gap. After a missed attempt by the Lakers the Trolls were sent to the line where Jessica Bianchi hit one free throw for the five point victory.

For the game Trinity was 29-of-58 from the field and Roosevelt was 27-of-54. The Trolls made 10 three-point shots while the Lakers made four. Trinity grabbed 33 boards to Roosevelt’s 29. Celina Wanta led the team with 18 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Lauren Stokes had 16 points, eight rebounds, and five assists. Breanna Toppen added 10 points and Bianchi had five assists.

The Trolls play next on December 31 at home against Indiana University-Northwest at 1 pm.
