Trolls Get Victory in Season Opener

The 2016-17 season started on a positive note for the Trolls and new interim head coach Bill DeRuiter with a victory in their season opener. The team opened in a front of a home crowd in the DeVos Gymnasium in a game with the University of Michigan-Dearborn.  Trinity took a 29-24 half-time lead and pulled away in the second half for a 67-50 win.

The Trolls came out strong and built a 15-8 lead in the opening five minutes of the game. They continued to hold the top spot at the end of the quarter at 18-13. The scoring margin wavered from six points to a one point difference in the second period, but the team never gave up the lead.  Each team added 11 points in the period to make the half-time score 29-24.

Increasing defensive pressure by the Trolls in the second half forced UM-Dearborn to turn the ball over and created easier buckets for the team.  In the half, Trinity increased their shooting percentage by 10 percent. Five minutes into the third period the team had created a 16 point scoring gap at 44-28. By the end of the period the difference was still 12 at 47-35.

Trinity continued to remain in control of the game in the fourth period and never allowed the Wolverines to get closer than nine points. Everyone was able to get into the action and contribute to the 17-point win.

For the game the Trolls shot .393 percent from the field and .667 percent from the line. UM-Dearborn was .317 percent from the field and only connected on 9-for-20 of their free throws for .450 percent. Trinity edged out UM-Dearborn on the boards with 43 rebounds to their 40. Celina Wanta was a team leader with 13 points, six rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Freshman Breanna Toppen also added 13 points and had five steals. Lauren Stokes finished with 11 points and six rebounds. Kelsie Foster was the high rebounder with seven.

The Trolls will play next on Saturday, October 29, at home at 1 pm against Waldorf University.
