Clausen and DeWeerd Named Track Athletes of the Week

After quality performances at the Benedictine University Relays in Lisle, Illinois, on April 12-13, Madelyn Clausen (Lakeville, Minnesota) and Caleb DeWeerd (Sioux Falls, South Dakota) earned Track and Field Athlete of the Week honors.   Clausen received the recognition for the field events from both the CCAC and NCCAA. DeWeerd’s honor came from the conference for the running events.

The weekly honor came for Clausen after she won the high jump in field of 26 competitors and broke the school record for the second week in a row. She cleared 1.68 meter (5-06) to achieve the NAIA “A” standard mark and qualify for the NAIA national meet.  For the outdoor season she has the fourth best jump in the NAIA and ranks first in the NCCAA.

In addition to her high jump performance Clausen was also a part of another school record at the meet. She joined Muabon Paye, Olivia Hoekstra, and Carissa Wisse in the 4 x 100 meter relay for a new school mark of 51.00. The foursome placed eighth in the race. Clausen also ran the 4 x 200 meter relay, with Alexis VanRyn, Sarah DeVries, and Brittany Hoekman for a seventh place finish.

It is the second week in a row and the third time this season Clausen was named the NCCAA Track and Field Student-Athlete of the Week for the NCCAA. It was her first CCAC honor.

DeWeerd received the conference honor with strong performances in three races. He out-ran 62 other competitors to finish in first place in the 800 meter.  He ran a career best time of 1:54.98 and was less than a second off the school record.

DeWeerd also helped the team score points with top four finishes and season best times in two relays. He was a part of the 4 x 800 meter relay team that posted an 8:05.57 for third. The other members of that squad were Andrew Dobrescu, Brantley VanOverloop, and Ryan Mathes.  DeWeerd ran a leg of the 4 x 400 meter relay that took fourth place at 3:27.65. He was joined on that team by Dobrescu, Noah Friesen, and Jurrone Petry.
