Trolls Compete in Benedictine Invitational

In their first local outdoor meet the Trolls participated in the Benedictine University Invitational (Lisle, Illinois). The teams had a number of great individual performances and scored well as team. The women’s and men’s teams both finished in sixth place of the 11 competing schools. The women scored 54 points and the men tallied 36. In addition a school record was set and five individuals reached the NCCAA qualifying standard.

The women’s team finished the meet with three individual first place finishes. Maddy Clausen won the high jump with a school record height of 5-04.25. It is the second time this season she has hit the NCCAA standard. Olivia Hoekstra was another first place finisher as she won the 400 meter with a time of 1:00.23. The final runner to break the tape was Megan DeWeerd in the 5000 meter. In that event the Trolls took first, second, and third with Nicole Syverson and Hope Fathman finishing behind DeWeerd respectively. DeWeerd’s 18:46.02 and Syverson’s 18:46.62 were NCCAA qualifying times.

Allie Boss was another NCCAA qualifier for the women’s team with a time of 2:23.57 in the 800 meter. She finished the race in 10th place.  Muabon Paye did well in the jumping events as she finished in eight in the long jump at 15-10.25 and ninth in the triple jump at 30-00.75.  

On the men’s side Caleb DeWeerd highlighted the performances as he finished in second place in the 800 meter. His time of 1:58.08 achieved the NCCAA standard. Also in that race Brantley VanOverloop took fifth at 2:00.12 and Andrew Dobrescu was seventh at 2:00.80.

Those 800 runners were also involved in scoring in other events. DeWeerd and Dobrescu joined Noah Friesen and Jurrone Petry for a fourth place finish in the 4 x 400 meter relay at 3:31.89. VanOverloop took sixth place in the javelin with a distance of 135-05.

The team also scored in the 400 meter with Friesen taking third place. He crossed the line at 52.36. Adding hurdles to the 400 meter, Nathan Krygsheld and Jim Bruinius scored points in that event. Krygsheld was seventh at 1:01.05 and Bruinius was eighth at 1:02.70.

The Trolls return to Benedictine University on April 12-13.
