Season Started at Grand Valley State

The indoor track and field season began for the Trolls at the Grand Valley State University Mike Lints Alumni Open in Allendale, Michigan. Trinity competed against athletes from a wide variety of schools and divisions. Overall the women’s team scored 20 points and finished in seventh place of the 15 teams. The men’s teams earned seven points and were 12th of 15. The Trolls also had one NAIA national qualifier and achieved three NCCAA qualifying standards.

Caleb DeWeerd was the top runner for the men’s team with two national standard performances. He became this season’s first NAIA national qualifier as he achieved the “A” standard in the mile with a time of 4:17.48. Overall he placed sixth place of 36 competitors in the race.  DeWeerd was also a two-time NCCAA national qualifier. In addition to the mile, he reached the standard in the 800 with a time of 1:59.63.

Also earning points on the men’s team was Brantley VanOverloop who took fifth place in the 1000 meter with a time of 2:44.62.

The women’s team had two NCCAA national qualifiers. On the track Nicole Syverson hit the mark in the mile with a time of 5:24.99. She took 14th place in that race. In the field events Madelyn Clausen cleared 5-00.25 in the high jump to qualify for the nation meet. Overall she placed third in the event.

The majority of the points for the women’s team came in the 1000 meter race in which Megan DeWeerd and Allie Boss finished in second and third place respectively. The teammates finished within hundredths of a second of each other as DeWeerd clocked a 3:12.63 and Boss had a 3.12.75.

The Trolls compete next on January 26 at St. Ambrose University.
