Runners Compete in Half-Marathon

In less than ideal conditions six Trinity runners competed in the Q Elite 8th Annual Half Marathon in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The temperature was around 30 degrees and the portions of the 13.1 mile course were icy and snowy, but that did not deter the Trolls, who were coming off a successful cross country season. At the end of the race all three of Trinity’s female runners had posted NAIA Outdoor Track qualifying times for the marathon.

For the women’s team Megan DeWeerd, Nicole Syverson, and Hope Fathman reached NAIA qualifying standards and finished in the top 10 of the 25 finishers. DeWeerd and Syverson were eighth and ninth respectively with a time of 1:29:46. They are NAIA automatic qualifiers. Fathman finished in tenth place at 1:31:00 and achieved the NAIA provisional qualifying mark.

The men’s team also had three runners compete on the challenging course.  Kyle Vander Plaats finished just outside of the qualifying standards with a time of 1:15:29. He finished in 12th place of the 32 finishers. Nick Heidinger took 20th place overall with a finish of 1:17:23. Brantley VanOverloop was on the course, but did not finish the race.

The indoor track and field season officially begins on January 19 at Grand Valley State University.
